Early Detection Saves Lives
A study conducted by the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute showed that nearly 90 percent of cancers in a study group of women aged 35-74 were detectable on mammograms. In comparison, 56 percent of cancers were detectable by physical and breast exam. According to the American Cancer Society, the mammogram is the safest, most effective way of detecting breast cancer early.
The American Cancer Society has established the following guidelines, grouped by age, for mammography and breast examinations:
- All women 20 years and older should do a breast self-examination monthly.
- A woman 20-40 should have a physician examine her breasts every three years and have an initial mammogram between the ages of 35-40.
- Women over 40 should have an annual mammogram and physician examination.
One out of eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. This year, 180,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 43,500 will die. While these numbers are frightening, research has shown that this number would be significantly reduced if all women age 50 and older had annual mammograms. If detected early, the breast cancer five-year survival rate is over 95%.
