Volunteer Opportunities

Auxiliary members play a very important role in the delivery of quality and compassionate patient care. They supplement the roles of the staff to create a comfortable experience for the patient.

    Two shifts daily, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

    Duties include:

    • Customer service
    • Operating cash register and charge card machine
    • Processing phone orders
    • Wrapping gifts
    • Other tasks as assigned by store manager

    Applicants must have good social and communication skills.

    The Pink Geranium Gift Shop is operated by the Auxiliary of Memorial Hospital of Carbondale with proceeds from its operation donated to the hospital.

    Volunteer Information Desk, Main Lobby

    Two shifts daily, 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

    Duties include:

    • Transporting patients and visitors by wheelchair to specified destinations.
    • Using phone and computer
    • Delivering flowers and mail to patients
    • Helping with mass mailings

    Applicants need good communication skills and the ability to push a wheelchair.

    Volunteer Desk, Sugery Reception

    Two shifts daily, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

    Duties include:

    • Reporting status of patients to families and friends
    • Providing comfort to waiting visitors
    • Assist physicians by monitoring location of patients' visitors
    • Answering phones

    Applicants need good social skills and must be able to remember families' names and locations.

    Same Day Surgery Prep

    Shift is from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

    Duties include:

    • Gathering carts from other areas, cleaning and preparing carts for patient use
    • Securing patients' personal belongings
    • Escorting family and friends to patients' bedside
    • Providing support services for Same Day Surgery Prep nurses

    Applicants must be physically fit enough for standing, light lifting and pushing carts.

    Same Day Surgery Recovery

    Hours are flexible, Monday through Friday

    Duties include:

    • Assisting patients with recovery period by bringing food/drinks, retrieving belongings and escorting family to bedside
    • Transporting patients by wheelchair to cars upon discharge
    • Preparing packets of charts
    • Moving and cleaning carts
    • Providing other necessary support services for post-op staff

    Applicants must be physically fit enough for standing, light lifting and pushing carts.

    Volunteer Desk, ICU Reception

    Hours are flexible between 10:00 a.m. and 8:30 p.m., Monday through Fridays. Weekend hours are available.

    Duties include:

    • Providing comfort to waiting visitors
    • Reporting patient status to families and friends
    • Answering phones

    Applicants need good social and communication skills and must be able to remember families' and visitors' names.

    Emergency Room Volunteers

    Shifts are flexible and available 24 hours a day, Monday through Sunday.

    Duties include:

    • Computer data entry and filing
    • Cleaning carts and stock linens
    • Observing/shadowing personnel
    • Providing support services to staff, patients, families, and visitors

    Applicants must be dependable and show initiative. A one-year commitment is necessary for volunteers.

    Employee Dining Cashier

    Shifts are from 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. No holidays are required. Can choose which days to work.

    Duties include:

    • Cashier for early morning customers in cafeteria

    Applicants should be comfortable working with cash register and making change. Prior experience is helpful but not required.

    Special Events and Programs
    Junior Volunteers

    Summer program for youth, ages 14 through 17. Starts mid-June and ends mid-August. Only positions in designated areas may be available.

    Blood Drives

    Blood drives in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale occur four times a year. Duties include assisting the American Red Cross personnel with registration, serving refreshments, escorting donors, and organizing pouches.

    Tour Guide

    Guide a tour for visitors or new employees who wish to visit the hospital. Tours last approximately one hour. Group size is limited to sixteen. Age range is four and up. Must be able to lead the way around the hospital, walk and stand for an hour.

    Other Volunteer Opportunities

    Other volunteer areas may be available upon request (i.e. Medical Records, Cancer Regisry, Education, Nursing Administration, Food and Nurtrition, Rehabilitation, etc.)

    Volunteers who complete a full shift (3 hours) will receive a free meal in the employee cafeteria (a $2.00 limit) or a free drink and a free meal ($2.50 limit)

    Volunteers MUST BE RELIABLE---cancel only when necessary and as much in advance as possible.

    We're always in need of volunteers who can give a few hours of their time to work on a project-by-project basis such as quilting squares for the quilt raffle, sewing baby clothes, blankets and pillows for preemies and working at the Red Cross Blood drives and the Fit For Life race.

    We Need Teenagers Too

    The Junior Volunteer Program gives teenagers an opportunity to volunteer in many of the hospital's departments during the summer.
