What Patients Need to Know About Radiation Therapy

Explaining treatment

  • The patient is referred to the Memorial Hospital Cancer Center by his or her physician. The physician is required to send the pertinent information and pathology reports to confirm the diagnosis of cancer.
  • On the first visit the radiation oncologist will explain the entire treatment plan. Information will be given regarding side effects and how it will affect the patient's lifestyle.
  • No pain or sensation is felt during radiation therapy. Patients lie quietly on a treatment table while the machine is positioned around them. As a result of this treatment, patients are not radioactive.
  • The average session takes 15 minutes to complete.
  • The patient receives two bills for the treatment services: one bill is from the hospital for technical support services and the other from the physician for professional services.
  • Radiation therapy is a recognized method of treatment for cancer and is covered by most private insurances. Standard Medicare payment guidelines apply. Insurance information is requested on the first visit.
