Local Physician Named Top Family Doc in the State

Dr. William Hays has been named IAFP 2008 Family Physician of the Year by the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians. He will be honored during a special ceremony in St. Louis this weekend. Due to ill health, Dr. Jeffrey Parks will accept the award on his behalf.

The Illinois School of Medicine’s Dr. Michael Glasser nominated Dr. Hays for the award.

Hays has emerged as the consummate leader in his health care community and served in numerous leadership posts at Herrin Hospital; including two terms as president of the medical staff. He has also been a delegate to IAFP on various committees with the Illinois State Medical Society and the Southern Illinois Medical Association. He is a faculty preceptor for the University of Illinois Rockford Rural Medical Education Program. He is a community leader who helped pioneer a minor league baseball team for southern Illinois. He also provided a new clubhouse for the high school baseball team and coached summer league.

Above all, he has been the life-changing family physician for an endless supply of grateful patients.

Practice partner Jeffrey Parks, MD, said Hays has been a pioneer of primary care in this region of the state.

“To the best of my knowledge, Bill was the first to advocate for in-department emergency physicians 24 hours a day at the local community hospital, the first to advocate for a full-time physical therapy department, the author of the currently used orders and protocols for hyperalimentation, the pioneer advocate for in-house CT Scan, and the first physician in the area to computerize his medical practice,” said Parks.
